WildPackets - Intel Xircom Ethernet Adapter Readme

GENERAL

This file describes the process of installing the WildPackets NDIS miniport error capture driver for the following Xircom Ethernet Adapters:

CreditCard CardBus Ethernet II 10/100

CBE2-100BTX

RealPort CardBus Ethernet 10/100

RBE-100BTX

RealPort2 CardBus Ethernet 10/100

R2BE-100BTX

The following cards have not been tested, but the WildPackets Xircom driver may work:

RealPort Ethernet 10/100

RE-100BTX

RealPort2 EtherNet 10/100

R2E-100BTX

The following card does not work with the WildPackets Xircom driver:

CreditCard Ethernet 10/100

CE3B-100BTX

Installation

Please see below for specific instructions for installing the WildPackets driver by going to the section for your operating system.

Uninstallation

To uninstall the WildPackets version of the driver, reinstall your original OEM drivers.

INSTALLATION

Windows XP

IMPORTANT!
You must first install and test the adapter with the OEM drivers. Do not install the WildPackets driver until the card is functioning properly on your network.

Install EtherPeek if it's not already installed. You must login to an account that has administrative privileges to update the driver.

To upgrade to the WildPackets driver, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Device Manager, double-click on the Xircom network adapter to open its Properties.
  2. Click on the Driver tab, and then on Update driver.
  3. Click on 'Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)', and then on Next.
  4. Click on 'Don't search. I will choose the driver to install.' and then on Next.
  5. Click the Have Disk button.
  6. If you received the WildPackets driver independently from the program, downloaded from the WildPackets website for instance, then browse to the folder where you unzipped the driver and select the Netcbe.inf file.
    Otherwise, browse to the directory where you installed the program plus the subdirectory "Driver\Xircom" and select the Netcbe.inf file (for example C:\Program Files\WildPackets\EtherPeek\Driver\Xircom).
  7. Click on Open and then OK.
  8. Choose the appropriate manufacturer and network adapter and click on Next.
  9. Click on 'Continue Anyway' to continue the installation when you receive the message saying 'The software you are installing for this hardware: 'Xircom (CardBus) Ethernet 10/100' has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP.'.
  10. If asked for file "cben5.sys", browse again to the directory in step 6 or choose it from the popup list.
  11. Click Finish, close all windows and reboot. (It may not ask, but reboot anyway).

Windows 2000

IMPORTANT!

  1. Go to Start Menu | Settings | Network and Dial-up Connections.
  2. Select the appropriate connection, right-click on it, and select properties.
  3. Click on Configure, the Driver tab, and then on Update driver.
  4. Click on Next, 'Display a list of the known drivers for this device...', and then on Next.
  5. Click the Have Disk button.
  6. If you received the WildPackets driver independently from the program, downloaded from the WildPackets website for instance, then browse to the folder where you unzipped the driver and select the Netcbe.inf file.
    Otherwise browse to the directory where you installed the program plus the subdirectory "Driver\Xircom" and select the Netcbe.inf file (for example C:\Program Files\WildPackets\EtherPeek\Driver\Xircom).
  7. Click on Open and then OK.
  8. Choose the appropriate manufacturer and network adapter and click on Next (twice).
  9. Click on Yes to continue the installation when you receive the message saying 'Digital Signature was Not Found'.
  10. If asked for file "cben5.sys", browse again to the directory in step 6 or choose it from the popup list.
  11. Click Finish, close all windows and reboot. (It may not ask, but reboot anyway).
